Eat them plain or topped with yogurt for a sweet, delicious snack. Imported from Brazil, the Acai berry is particularly high in anti-oxidants and has been touted as a powerful skin booster. The China-native Goji berry is another super food with exceptionally high anti-oxidant capabilities.

Next time you tuck into a delicious plate or three of sushi, do so absoloutly guilt free. Sushi happens to be one of the healthiest meals you can eat, and here’s why:

1. It’s rich in omega 3 fats. Fish contains a special group of fats, knows as omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to health and wellbeing. A plethora of studies have shown that omega 3’s can help boost brain function, prevent inflammation (the basis of most acute and chronic disease), help prevent heart disease and diabetes and improve the condition of the skin by slowing the ageing process. Salmon is particularly rich in omega 3’s. Also, because sushi is raw, the integrity of the fats in the fish are preserved. Cooking can seriously damage our fats; so raw is always a better option if you want to get the most nutrition out of the fat you are eating.

2. It’s low Glycemic Index. Many people stay away from sushi rice, assuming that it has a high GI. Sushi rice, despite bring the stodgy, short grain variety, is actually low GI, because of the amount of vinegar it contains. So sushi rice releases carbohydrate slowly into the blood stream, keeping your energy levels sustained for longer.

3. The seaweed is super-healthy. Sea vegetables, like seaweed are a rich source of iodine, the mineral that feeds the thyroid gland. A healthy thyroid gland spells a faster metabolism, which means you get more energy and vitality from the food you eat. Seaweed is also rich in chlorophyll, which is similar in structure to hemoglobin in the human body, which carries oxygen around the body.

4. The wasabi is good for you. Wasabi, or green horseradish paste is loaded with antioxidant nutrients that help clean and cleanse the body of free radicals. It also has an exceptionally high vitamin C content, and is also rich in potassium, sulphur and calcium. Wasabi also helps clear the nasal passages and sinuses.

5. Ginger is a powerful anti-septic. Ginger has been used for thousands of years to treat nausea and upset stomach. The ginger in your sushi may also help kill any parasites that may be present in your fish. (more…)
